SHEFFIELD Wednesday defender Rob Jones believes Chris O’Grady can play a big part in the Owls first season back in the Championship.
O’Grady scored in the 1-1 friendly at Sheffield FC last night and led the line well.
Jones said: “You know what you’re going to get from Chris. He’s a big, strong boy.
“He played a good game, had a good touch and scored a great goal. It was a great finish.
“He’s a team player and tonight he showed he can put a shift in.”
Wednesday had better luck with another side they sent to Stocksbridge Park Steels, where they ran out 4-0 winners.
Bookmakers BetVictor say they are not convinced there is much substance in speculation that Wednesday are keen on securing the services of Joey Barton.
They make the QPR player 16/1 to be at Hillsborough either on loan or as a full time signing on September 1. Blackburn Rovers are 5/2 and West Ham United 6/1 to give the controversial midfielder a chance.
Barton, aged 29, was red-carded in the final game of last season and hit with a subsequent 12-match ban for his actions.
Owls boss David Jones reportedly said: “I wouldn’t be frightened of bringing him here if he became available.”
Tranmere Rovers boss Ronnie Moore is delighted with Wednesday’s decision to loan him midfielder Liam Palmer, aged20.
“Wednesday are keen for him to go out and get games, and we get an energetic, hard-working box-to-box midfielder.
“It’s a deal that suits both clubs really well” he said.
