Dave Jones has told how the Owls secretly tracked Atdhe Nuhiu before he was landed from under the noses of Premier League clubs.
The 6ft 6ins striker has been on trial at Crystal Palace and is understood to have attracted interest from West Ham and Championship club Reading.
But while the Owls were continually being linked with other forwards they were conducting a patient pursuit of the 23-year-old who has joined them on a three-year contract, on a free transfer.
“There were quite a few clubs interested,” Jones told The Star. “We have been tracking him for two or three months; we’ve had him watched, and I went to see him play for Palace on Tuesday.
“We’re really chuffed to bits that we’ve got him and he has decided his future lies here. He wants to learn and do well. He’s big and strong and has good feet.”
Nuhiu could have been attracted by the lure of first-team football, which may have been harder to obtain in the top flight.
He said: “You talk to other clubs, this is natural. But this club always felt right for me; it feels comfortable and I am very happy to be here.”
Jones has yet to decide whether he goes straight into the side at Chesterfield tomorrow.
Nuhiu’s signing is subject to international clearance.
He played in a 3-0 win for Palace at Gillingham on Tuesday and scored in a 2-1 win at Dagenham and Redbridge last Saturday. Last season he was on loan from Rapid Vienna to Turkish club Eskisehirspor.
Many Owls fans will hope that the club can also sign defender Kamil Zayatte, who impressed against Rangers and is wanted by Jones.
