Striker Atdhe Nuhiu has revealed the reason why he took off his shirt after scoring a late penalty in their victory over Middlesbrough.

The Austrian player, brought on as a second-half replacement for Chris Maguire, coolly sent goalkeeper Tomas Mejias the wrong way from the spot after Dean Whitehead was adjudged to have handled Leon Best’s goalbound effort.

It was Nuhiu’s fourth goal since moving to Hillsborough and he was cautioned for taking off his shirt in celebration. Nuhiu pulled off his shirt to reveal an emotional message: ‘You will always be in my heart XH. Nuhiu’.

He said: “That goal was for my uncle who died one month ago. I wanted to score it for him. I had it in my mind a long time that I wanted to score a goal and dedicate it to him and I was really happy to do it.”

Nuhiu’s penalty was his fourth goal in 30 appearances this season.

“I’m only looking up with this squad we have,” insisted the 24-year-old. “We’ve shown we can beat any team when we’re on our game and under Stuart Gray, we are moving forward.

“I’m really enjoying it here and hopefully we can celebrate more moments like that in the coming weeks.”
