Defender Tom Lees is the heart and soul of Sheffield Wednesday’s team, according to boss Carlos Carvalhal.
Following several months of speculation linking him with a move away from Hillsborough, the centre-back pledged his future to the Owls until the summer of 2019 last Friday.
Carvalhal has expressed his delight over Lees agreeing a new contract extension.
The Portuguese told The Star: “Tom [Lees] is one of the captains of the team. He’s a very strong personality.
“He is a very good player. I like him a lot. He’s happy with us so it’s fantastic news he is staying.
“It’s important you have like a soul in the team. To create that, you need personalities who can give energy and guarantee the values of Sheffield Wednesday. Tom Lees is that player. Those type of players we must keep at the club for a long time.
“He understands the values of the club and other people will follow that kind of spirit.”
It remains to be seen whether captain Glenn Loovens will partner Lees at the heart of Wednesday’s rearguard in their opening-day clash against Bristol City this weekend. The Dutchman sat-out Saturday’s comprehensive 5-0 friendly win over St Mirren because of an on-going ankle problem.
