Ryan Meadows delivered an accomplished display in the Owls Under-21s first home win of the season.

The midfielder put Wednesday’s youngsters ahead on the stroke of half-time in their nervy 2-1 victory over Crewe at Hillsborough yesterday.

Against the run of play, Meadows, who was neat and tidy in possession, rose highest to head in winger Jack Stobbs’ corner.

Midfielder Tom Elliott, on trial from non league Worksop Town, doubled the Owls advantage in the 64th minute, stabbing in from close range after centre-back Perry Ng headed against his own crossbar following great play by Stobbs and Matt Penney.

Ryan Wintle bagged a spectacular late consolation and Ng struck the woodwork in added on time as Wednesday rode their luck to return to winning ways.

Out-of-favour defender Darryl Lachman featured and striker Keenan King, on trial from Leicester City, were also given run-outs.

Youth boss Neil Thompson said: “I’ve said to Ryan Meadows and Ryan Croasdale, who are third year pros, they need to start dictating games. They didn’t do that first half but did second.

“We forced the play and that was through the midfield area. One or two are starting to find a little bit of form.”

*Wednesday: Dawson; Booker, Lachman, Beatson (Anderson 82), Wildin; Stobbs, Croasdale, Meadows, Penney; Elliott (Clarke 78), King (Lee 68). Substitutes: McDonagh, Nicholson.
