Sheffield Wednesday secured their first pre-season victory, beating Chesterfield 2-0 at the Proact Stadium today.

First half goals from Kieran Lee and Fernando Forestieri helped the Owls see off the League One club.

It was another good workout for last season's Play-Off finalists, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Alfreton Town in midweek.

Wednesday dominated the early skirmishes, with Forestieri spurning a great opportunity to force Ryan Fulton into action after a nice move involving Marco Matias, Ross Wallace and Lucas Joao.

Carvalhal's side went ahead in the ninth minute when Lee slid in Jack Hunt's lovely cross from the right.

It was one-way traffic and Joao's weak drive was well blocked before Marco Matias was denied a sight at goal by Paul McGinn at the back post.

Chesterfield's best chance duly came in the 24th minute but Joe Wildsmith was equal to Sam Hird's close range drive.

Forestieri, making his first pre-season appearance after shaking off a minor injury, coolly doubled Wednesday's lead, side-footing home from 15 yards after Joao and Lee had carved open the Spireites' defence.

The Spireites could have reduced the deficit in the 37th minute only for Curtis Morrison to fluff his lines after a peach of a centre by former Owls player Dan Jones.

The tempo and intensity dropped after the break and clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Dawson had to be alert to keep out Kristian Dennis' cross turned shot but it became a disjointed affair, with both sides making a raft of changes.

With 17 minutes left, Dennis missed a glorious chance to get on the score-sheet. He dragged wide after a mesmerising run and cut back by Gboly Ariyibi, who outpaced and outmuscled Jeremy Helan.

At the other end, Jack Stobbs' fizzed a low centre into the danger area but Ryan Fulton showed good reflexes to deny the young winger.
