Sheffield Wednesday are expected to confirm the signing of highly-rated Portuguese striker Lucas Joao by the end of the week.
Reports in Portugal claim Wednesday had an initial offer turned down for the 21-year-old on Monday by Nacional.
But The Star understands the Owls have agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £2m for Joao, who flew to England with his representatives yesterday to thrash out personal terms. It is believed he will pen a four-year deal.
Regarded as a speedy centre forward, Joao watched Wednesday lose 4-2 at Scunthorpe United last night despite first half goals by Atdhe Nuhiu and Marco Matias.
Carlos Carvalhal said: “The score is not important in friendly games but I’m not happy with the four goals we conceded. These kind of things can happen when you are building a team. We made some very bad mistakes and gave two goals away to the opponents. We must correct that as soon as possible.”
Joao bagged 12 goals in 27 outings during a loan spell for SC Mirandela in the 2012/13 season. The Angolan-born player, capped three times at Portuguese Under-21 level, netted six goals in 24 starts for Nacional last term.
Wednesday have been in the hunt to sign Rudy Austin and reportedly offered the ex-Leeds midfielder a deal. But their pursuit has been thwarted by tough work permit rules on foreign players.
Another player who Wednesday may miss out on is Rhoys Wiggins. A fee had been agreed with Charlton for the left-back and he underwent a medical on Monday. However, no agreement has yet been reached on personal terms.
