Lucas Joao’s barnstorming performance in the first round of the Capital One Cup won him plenty of admirers among Wednesdayites.

And it seems the 21-year-old’s impressive early days with the Owls has also attracted attention from further afield.

Portugal national team head coach Fernando Santos has named the forward in a provisional squad for the friendly against France on September 4 and the Euro 2016 qualifier away at Albania on September 7.

Joao will discover on Friday if he has made the final squad but Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal is delighted for his fellow countryman.

“I’m very happy with Lucas for what he is doing here and for being in the squad for the national team,” Carvalhal said.

“We are all very happy with that.”

Joao has yet to win a senior cap for Portugal but was called up for one previous squad and named as a substitute for a friendly against Cape Verde in March.

He also has three U21 caps, scoring two goals.

Despite the early promise of Joao’s time at Hillsborough, Carvalhal insists he remains one for the future of the club.

And he has pledged to treat him with kid gloves in order to maximise his development.

He said: “Lucas Joao is a boy.

“He is a player that we believe in the future will do very well. But we must be careful with him. “I believe he will get better.”

Joao sat out Saturday’s trip to Leeds United with a hamstring problem but could return to the squad for Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup second round clash with Oxford United.
