Lucas Joao is desperate to cap off a “difficult” first year in English football by helping Sheffield Wednesday seal a play-off finish.

Joao, a big-money signing from Nacional last summer, featured prominently in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Hillsborough.

Leading marksman Fernando Forestieri opened the scoring before half-time, claiming his 15th goal of the campaign, but substitute Andre Dozzell’s 71st minute strike denied the Owls a third home win on the trot.

The result leaves Wednesday five points clear of nearest rivals Cardiff City, who were held to a goalless draw by Queens Park Rangers, with four matches remaining.

Striker Joao, who has notched eight goals in 42 outings, has told The Star: “It has been difficult for me but I have adapted very well now. I need to carry on working hard to help the team.

“We are in sixth place and have worked hard as a team.

“It has been a good year for everyone. We just want to finish it off well.

“We take it game by game. We think that is the best way for us. We want to finish in the play-offs and we are still five points clear of Cardiff.”

The 22-year-old refused to be downhearted after the Owls failed to put more daylight between themselves and Cardiff and has quickly switched his attentions to tomorrow’s clash with relegation-threatened MK Dons.

“We played well (against Ipswich), tried to win, and score goals,” he said. “It was not our day. It was not a bad result. We have to now focus on the next game. We try to win every game and we have another opportunity on Tuesday to win three points.
