Head coach Carlos Carvalhal has leapt to the defence of misfiring Owls striker Gary Hooper.

Since arriving on loan from Norwich City on October 27, Hooper has yet to make a big impact, failing to score in six Wednesday appearances.Four of the 27-year-old’s outings have come as a substitute.

In recent weeks, some Wednesdayites have criticised his performances on social media, questioning his application and match sharpness.

But Carvalhal is calling on the fans to give him more time to adjust to his new surroundings.

“Hooper is doing well,” he stressed. “He is not magic.

“He cannot just come here and in one second start to score goals.

“It is the way and that is for all the players.

“With experience, some come and start to effect the game after some time, three or four weeks.

“Fernando [Forestieri] didn’t effect too much of the game in the beginning but after some time he started well.

“Some players do it more quickly like [Barry] Bannan; he came and started playing well in the first weeks. Some players take more time.

“We are happy about the players and the quality they bring and how they are doing.”

Hooper may have to settle for a place on the bench again when seventh-placed Wednesday travel to Cardiff City, who occupy the final Championship play-off position, on Saturday.
