Will Keane believes Sheffield Wednesday are capable of challenging for a Championship play-off spot next season.

The striker reckons head coach Stuart Gray possesses the nucleus of a team who can push for promotion. He feels they will be a force to be reckoned with if they bring in a couple of reinforcements to increase competition for places.

Keane, who recently returned to his parent club Manchester United after scoring three goals in 13 outings during a loan spell with the Owls, told The Star: “I think a realistic aim has got to be the play-offs. You want to aim high and they weren’t far off it around the New Year period.

“If they bring a in a few players, who knows what can happen.

“The owner [Dejphon Chansiri] has got plans to push the club forward. His ambition is to get the club back into the Premier League by 2017 and I’m sure he wouldn’t say something like that if he didn’t mean it.

“Wednesday have obviously got very big ambitions and got a clear direction of where they want to go. If you are investing good money into the club, you want to, understandably, see good results.”

The 22-year-old is training again at United and plans to reassess his Old Trafford future over the summer.

Two years remain on Keane’s contract with the Premier League giants, but the Stockport-born player has not ruled out rejoining Wednesday.

But he added: “It is still quite early days to see what I will be doing next season.

“I would like to be playing at United but I’m sure they will bring in some players over the summer so it’s not easy.

“At the moment, I am at a Premier League club and would like to play in this division. That is what a lot of players aim to do.

“I will have to see what my options are in pre-season and take it from there.”

Gray was pleased with Keane’s contribution, praising his “fantastic” attitude and application. The Owls head coach also described him as a “quality player”.
