Dave Jones has slammed the “stupidity” of Jermaine Johnson after he was sent off at Rotherham last night.

The winger faces a club fine as well as a three-match FA ban for aiming a head-butt at Millers winger Ben Pringle.

Owls boss Jones was also unhappy with the team’s performance in a 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat. They were trailing when Johnson was sent off after he had gone on as a sub. Jones said: “It’s stupidity. You can’t head-butt someone. He’s done it before. That’s not acceptable to this club. He’s been told.

“You can’t defend it. We’re trying to get back into the game; it’s hard enough with 11 men, going down to 10 makes it more difficult.

“He’ll be punished, and rightly so, because I lose him for three games.”

Jones criticised his team’s defending. “We knew they were going to put balls into the box. We didn’t pick up second balls or clear our lines. We didn’t compete hard enough or do enough around their area to win the match.” Jones saw evidence that Wednesday should have had a penalty when Michail Antonio was booked for diving, but refused to make an excuse: “What cost us the game was we didn’t defend two long throws.”

Millers manager Steve Evans said: “We always believed we could win the tie but we knew it would be tough against a great club. If they were in the top 10 or 12 of the Premier League, nobody would bat en eyelid.

Johnson later posted on his Twitter page: “Know it’s not acceptable, but I really wanna say I’m sorry for the bottom of my heart for what happen tonight.”
