SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Dave Jones today described the signing of goalkeeper Chris Kirkland as a major scoop.
“I am absolutely delighted that we will have a goalkeeper of Chris’s pedigree,” said Jones.
“This is a major scoop for Sheffield Wednesday.”
The 31-year-old Wigan and former Coventry, Liverpool and England keeper has agreed a two-year contract.
Jones added: “He is an extremely talented goalkeeper who still has a lot to prove and is still hungry for success.
“I know some people will talk about injuries he has had but he has been fit for two seasons and he is in his prime.
“I tried to sign him when I was at Cardiff but the move was blocked. This time I have gone one better and I couldn’t be happier.”
But Jones also says the newcomer is not guaranteed a starting role.
“I don’t care where a player comes from, or whether he costs £1m or £1. Whoever is in form in any position gets the shirt; it’s as simple as that.
“Right now, I am focusing on the fact that we have agreed a deal with someone of Chris Kirkland’s quality.”
