Liam Palmer believes the return to fitness of Lewis Buxton will bring out the best in him and his full back rival.

Buxton returned to the Owls matchday squad on Saturday for the first time in more than three months after recovering from a knee injury.

And Palmer admitted he feels the need to raise his game when pressed by Buxton, who was arguably the Owls’ first choice right back before this injury ravaged campaign.

“Lewis being back makes me know I’ve got to raise my game,” Palmer said.

“Competition all over the pitch is a good thing. It keeps you on your toes knowing that someone is there if you don’t have the best of games.

“It will also push Lewis to get back in the team so hopefully it’ll have a positive affect on everything.”

Buxton’s return marked an even greater increase in competition for places among the Owls squad.

Sam Hutchinson recently recovered from a knee issue of his own while Giles Coke is on the verge of a return from an achilles problem.

Palmer says it was good to see the Wednesday bench looking strong for the clash with Bolton last weekend.

He said: “We haven’t got the biggest of squads but you could see from our bench that it was a strong as we’ve had it for a long time.

“That’s a really positive sign going into the business end of the season.

“The physio Paul Smith and his team have done a tremendous job. They put as much time in as they can to getting us a full squad.
