DAVE Jones has sparked a guessing game about who makes way if Everton on-loan starlet Ross Barkley makes his home debut against Huddersfield tomorrow as expected.
The two leading candidates for a rest seem to be Rhys McCabe and Rodri. Barkley replaced Rodri at half-time of the defeat at Brighton, but boss Jones has hinted McCabe could be given a break.
Like McCabe, Barkley is a midfield player but he replaced Rodri in a fairly advanced role at Brighton, not far behind Jay Bothroyd.
Jones admits: “Rodri’s had two good home games and two away where he’s not played as well as he can. He’s still young and learning his trade, and it’s difficult when things are running at 100 miles an hour and you’re trying to bed in quickly.
“Rhys has done superbly. Ross was the high point of a midfield three at Brighton; Rhys can do that as well.
“We tried to match Brighton in midfield because Rodri was struggling with their deep midfielder.
“With Chris Lines being injured, we’ve had to rely an awful lot on two midfield players (McCabe and Jose Semedo).
“Rhys has played a lot of games in a short time, he didn’t have a pre-season. He was away on international duty last week - we have to make sure that doesn’t catch up with him and we’re left short. That’s why we needed another midfield player.”
