Caretaker manager Stuart Gray is enthusing over a “special night” for the Owls after they beat Championship leaders Leicester.
But today Gray will meet Milan Mandaric to discuss his future after initially being asked just to take charge of last night’s clash.
Gray revealed that Mandaric has told him there had been 40 applications for the job.
Said the caretaker boss: “Any manager who is out of work or in work would be interested in this club.
“He (Mandaric) told me there had been about 40 applications and I can understand why. It is a fantastic club.”
Gray thanked the players for their commitment last night and the crowd for their support.
He admitted: “Before the game we were disappointed and the players were very disappointed that Dave Jones and Paul Wilkinson lost their jobs.
“There are a lot of players who feel they let Dave down because he brought them in. I can understand why the Chairman did it because or results were not good enough. I was asked to take charge for this game and all I said to the players was to give 100 per cent.”
He added: “As a manager or a coach, you want a win and the performance to go with it. We got them both.
“I made changes - it was a bit of a gamble because some of them haven’t played much football but they got through on desire and enthusiasm. It was a special night. I thank the players for their commitment and the fans for getting behind them after we had gone one down against a very good side who have quality in every department.” Gray also praised two-goal star Connor Wickham: “Connor took his goals fantastically well. We had him on loan last season when he was a boy - he’s a man now.”
