A hat-trick by Charlton Athletic striker Marvin Sordell sentenced mid-table Sheffield Wednesday to a 3-2 defeat at Hillsborough this afternoon.
The Owls raced into a two-goal lead after eight minutes thanks to goals by Atdhe Nuhiu and Chris Maguire.
But the Addicks, fighting at the wrong end of the Championshop table, refused to buckle and Sordell capitalised on some sloppy defending by the hosts.
Stuart Gray shuffled his pack, bringing in Liam Palmer, Giles Coke and Leon Best. Out went Lewis Buxton, Joe Mattock and Sam Hutchinson.
Buxton sustained a knee injury in the Good Friday victory over Bournemouth while Hutchinson serves the first of a two-match ban following his red card on the south coast.
It took Wednesday only three minutes to break the deadlock, Atdhe Nuhiu rifling in an unstopabble left foot volley which went in via the right hand post. It was the Austrian striker’s fourth goal in his last three outings.
Chris Maguire doubled their lead in the eighth minute, curling in a glorious effort after great play by Nuhiu. Maguire was yellow carded after celebrating by taking his shirt off.
Wednesday’s joy was short-lived as Charlton pulled one back in the 10th minute. Marvin Sordell slotted home after the hosts failed to deal effectively with a long ball.
Despite that setback, Gray’s men responded in a positive fashion and Maguire squared to Nuhiu, who fired wide under pressure from Dorian Dervitte.
Moments later, Kieran Lee some how steered his effort into the side-netting following a bright burst by Michail Antonio.
Wednesday were made to pay for those misses as Sordell levelled things up two minutes before break, drilling in a low right shot into the bottom corner after Callum Harriott robbed Antonio of possession.
Antonio was then taken off, having suffered a facial injury before Charlton’s equaliser.
Sordell continued to cause Wednesday’s backline problems after the re-start, shooting wide from distance before forcing Kirkland into a smart save at his near post after shrugging off Oguchi Onyewu’s tackle.
Wednesday failed to heed those warnings as Sordell completed his hat-trick and a remarkable turnaround in the 63rd minute. He intercepted Nuhiu’s sloppy back pass, dribbled forward at pace before coolly stroking in a right foot effort.
Nuhiu lashed a half volley over to compound the Owls’ frustration.
Wednesday: Kirkland; Palmer, Onyewu, Llera, Helan; Antonio, Coke, Lee, Maguire; Nuhiu, Best. Substitutes: Martinez, J Johnson, Taylor, Mattock, Corry, Lavery, Afobe.
