Reda Johnson is out to maintain a proud scoring record and setting a challenge in front of last season’s Wednesday top scorer, Michail Antonio.
The left-back’s wager with his team-mate about who will score the most goals this season is intended as a bit of fun that could also entail serious benefits for the club.
While the forward has yet to get off the mark this season after notching nine goals in 2012-13 and 14 in all for the club, Johnson can point to last Saturday’s equaliser against Millwall and a haul of 16 Owls goals - a remarkable total for a left back.
In addition, Wednesday have won 10 of the games in which Johnson scored, drawn four and lost only two.
When asked by The Star whether he had set himself a goal target this season, the defender replied: “I have a bet with Michail Antonio that I will score more than him! It is just trying to help the team score more.”
Johnson suspects he will lose the wager - which is for a “small amount”.
But he will be pleased if it it helps to inspire Antonio to get among the goals: “If he can do more, it will be good for the team.”
Reda does not dismiss the idea that one day he may play as a striker: “Two years ago I would have said no. Now I just play football!”
He has already undergone one conversion, from centre half to full back, and loves to get among the goals: “It is good for me but even better for the team, because when I score, normally we win or draw.
“The only time last season when I scored and we didn’t win was against Huddersfield.”
