Dutch centre-half Joost van Aken is confident Sheffield Wednesday can turnaround their inconsistent form, starting at home to Barnsley today (12:30pm).

Carlos Carvalhal’s charges lie in 16th position, just six points above the relegation zone, after suffering four defeats in their last five Championship matches.

Although some supporters have turned on Carvalhal in recent weeks, chairman Dejphon Chansiri has declared the Portuguese chief still has his “100 per cent” backing.

Van Aken, who is set to replace the suspended Glenn Loovens in their crunch clash with with the Reds, told The Star: “The players are right behind Carlos. We are very confident in our coach and he has confidence in us.

“Of course, when you win, confidence is higher.

“But it is not only about winning. It is also about the performances. Our performances need to be better and then the wins will come for sure. That’s what I expect.”

Van Aken has challenged the team to be more consistent in their quest to mount a third successive promotion challenge.

“We are not happy with the position we are in now at the moment,” he said. “We need a lot of wins, more points and a better way of playing and then the points will come for sure.

“With our squad, that is possible. We have a good team but we need to be consistent.”

Van Aken admits “the pressure is on the players” to perform heading into a Hillsborough double-header.

“We need to show the fans and everybody in the club a good performance,” he said.
