Experienced defender Lewis Buxton has expressed his disappointment over failing to secure a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

The right-back, who joined the Hillsborough outfit from Stoke City in January 2009 after a productive loan stint, discovered on Tuesday he will released by the Owls when his deal expires this summer.

Despite earning a place back in the starting line-up in the final month of the 2014/15 campaign, Buxton said he knew three months ago that it was “unlikely” he would be offered fresh terms.

The 31-year-old told The Star: “I went to see the manager [Stuart Gray] in February. He just said that it was unlikely that I would get something but it was dependent on the budget.

“I have been injured a fair bit in the last few years and, when you haven’t played a lot of games, you know when the summer comes around that you are going to be struggling.

“I did my best until the end of the season, got back in the team, played a few games and set up a couple of goals.

“When I left the Watford game, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen but the press release on Tuesday confirmed everything.

“I have been at the club a long time and you get a relationship with everyone so I was really disappointed when I found out the news but it was not completely unexpected. It was not like a bolt out of the blue.

“It is hard to leave but that’s football. I have to dust myself down and go again.”

Isle of Wight-born Buxton says he has already received interest from clubs in England and abroad but insists he is in no rush to make a decision over his long-term future.

“One MLS club has been in contact but I want to stay in England and play in the Championship,” he stressed. “Until I’ve got something signed, sealed and delivered, it is just a waiting game like all the other players who are out of contract.

“All I’m going to do is work hard in the summer and make sure that I have a really good season wherever that maybe.”
