DAVID Norris, who has been linked to Sheffield Wednesday, believes he has played his last match for current club Portsmouth.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who signed for Pompey last summer from Ipswich Town, is something of a folk hero to Portsmouth fans after his superb equaliser last season against south coast rivals Southampton at St Mary’s.

But such are the money concerns at Fratton Park that every players has a ‘For Sale’ sign on them and The Star understands that Norris is resigned to leaving the 2008 FA Cup winners as they begin life this season in League One.

Norris scored eight times last season to end the campaign as Pompey’s top goalscorer.

He is an attacking midfielder that is durable. During a six year spell with Plymouth Argyle he played 219 times and he turned out on 106 occasions for the Tractor Boys before making the switch to Portsmouth.

Pompey have already sold defender Jason Pearce to Leeds United and Crystal Palace, who made an enquiry earlier this summer for Norris, have picked up Joel Ward.

Norris refused to comment on whether Wednesday were interested in him and Owls boss Dave Jones has a policy of never discussing his transfer targets.

One player who is closer to finalising his move to Hillsborough is Palace defender Anthony Gardner.

And another who has already put pen to paper is left back Joe Mattock. He told The Star that, despite interest from other clubs, once he had spoken to Dave Jones he couldn’t wait to sign.

“When I met him I was really impressed with what he told me. Wednesday is a big club and he made it clear that he wasn’t afraid to talk about the ‘p’ word (promotion),” he said.

“I’m excited to join them and although I don’t know too much about the lads I saw them on TV a couple of times last season and I’ve heard they were playing some really good football towards the end of the season.”

Mattock, who was on loan at Brighton from West Brom last season, had a spell at Sheffield United in 2011.

The 22-year-old from Leicester said: “I know it’s a big city and I’m glad to be back up there - just on the right side of the city this time.”
