DAVE Jones, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, has told The Star he is thrilled to have got Rhys McCabe on board, saying: “This is a big coup for us.”
Attacking midfielder McCabe joined the Championship new boys on a three-year contract yesterday from fallen Scottish giants Rangers, subject to international clearance.
Jones has confirmed Wednesday beat off interest from several clubs in the top flight, including Everton, Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City, to land the highly-rated 20-year-old.
Scotland Under-21 international McCabe, who made his senior debut for the Ibrox outfit in March, was one of a clutch of players to reject the transfer of his contract to the newco Rangers in June.
Jones said: “Rhys is an up-and-coming star and, due to the financial situation at Rangers, we have managed to bring in the boy. We are absolutely delighted.
“We have been tracking him for some time. There was a lot of interest in him so it is big coup.”
