Left-back Rhoys Wiggins is close to becoming Sheffield Wednesday’s ninth summer signing.
The Owls have agreed a fee, reportedly £750,000, with Charlton Athletic for the 27-year-old and the deal could be confirmed before Wednesday’s pre-season friendly at Scunthorpe United this week. Contrary to reports, Wiggins, who came through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace, has yet to undergo a medical. He recently suffered an ankle injury in the Addicks’ friendly versus Dulwich Hamlet but is believed to have recovered from that knock.
In recent weeks, Carlos Carvalhal’s men have been linked with a number of full-backs ahead of the new Championship season, which gets underway on August 8.
On adding to his team, the Portuguese said: “The chairman is working on that and I trust him 100 per cent.
“I leave that to him.”
Wiggins moved to Charlton from Bournemouth in 2011. The Welshman starred in the Addicks’ promotion-winning team the following campaign. His impressive performances saw him selected in the League One PFA Team of the Year.
Injuries have since hampered Wiggins’ progress, restricting him to just over 20 appearances in two of the last three seasons.
The emergence of Morgan Fox during the 2014/15 campaign also resulted in less game time for Wiggins. And he slipped even further down in the pecking order last week as the Addicks snapped up Morocco international Zakarya Bergdich.
Wednesday are short of cover in the left-back spot, with Claude Dielna facing a minimum of three weeks on the sidelines due to a toe injury he picked up in the their pre-season friendly at York City earlier this month.
Head coach Carvalhal admitted: “Claude didn’t travel to Portugal because he has an injury. I think he will be out for a minimum of three to four weeks.”
Carvalhal labelled Friday’s display against his former club Braga as their best in the warm-up matches so far.
Wednesday head back to England today following their five-day warm-weather training camp in Portugal, having been held to a goalless draw in their training ground clash with Farense on Saturday. Midfielder Filipe Melo was taken off on as a precautionary measure in the early stages.
Meanwhile, ex-Owls defender Kamil Zayatte has joined Saudi Arabian first division club Al-Raed while Giles Coke is on trial at Ipswich Town.
