New Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal is pondering his first foray in the transfer market as he bids to win over the trust of the Championship club’s fanbase.

The 49-year-old Portuguese, named Wednesday’s new head coach on Tuesday night, is currently assessing the options at his disposal, with the first-team squad having reported back for pre-season duty yesterday.

Along with his backroom staff of Joao Mario, Joao Cunha and Bruno Lage, Carvalhal put the players through their paces, conducting a double training session.

The transfer window has officially re-opened and it is not beyond the realms of possibility Carvalhal will use his contacts in his homeland in an attempt to increase competition for places at Hillsborough.

Wednesday, who have already captured defenders Darryl Lachman and Vincent Sasso, have been linked with moves for Porto winger Ricardo and Gil Vicente midfielder Vitor Goncalves. Ricardo, capped at Portuguese U21 level, played 13 times for Porto last season while Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna were thought to be recently monitoring Goncalves.

Carvalhal said: “Sheffield Wednesday is an historical club with amazing fans - they love their football and their club.

“I want be part of these feelings, to love the club with a big passion and try to give happiness to all.

“To achieve that we must play positive football, and if we do that, we can all go the same way.

“I have coached big teams in Europe like Sporting and Besiktas and played in the Europa League but my child’s dream has always been to coach in England.

“To come to England and to a club like Sheffield Wednesday is amazing. I’m excited and I want to win the trust of our massive fans.”

It is understood the Owls are still searching for a British coach to work alongside Carvalhal as part of their new management team. They had held talks with Swindon Town chief Mark Cooper but it appears he has decided to stay put.

Former Liverpool coach Mike Marsh is rumoured to be on Wednesday’s radar.
