Carlos Carvalhal has laughed off suggestions his Sheffield Wednesday side might be nervous heading into this afternoon’s high-stakes clash with Cardiff City.
Wednesday need just a single point at Hillsborough to secure a play-off berth, see off the challenge of seventh placed Cardiff and avoid heading into the final day next week needing to pick up points.
The home allocation is sold out, ensuring Hillsborough will be packed with expectant supporters.
But head coach Carvalhal expects his side to take it in the stride.
“Which game did you see our team be nervous?” he said. “Let me know.
“With Arsenal in the cup? No.
“Against Charlton with more than 29,000 in the crowd? No.
“This is another game.
“We understand the people may be more nervous but to us it’s another game in the Championship.
“And then we have another game against Wolverhampton next Saturday.
“We will not finish the season on Saturday because there is another game.
“It is not a problem to us.”
Carvalhal says his players and staff should enjoy this afternoon as promotion chases are the best part of the game.
He said: “At this time it is not stress, it is an opportunity to do something.
“It is a challenge to us and we like the challenge because of what is the opposite.
“The opposite is no stress, no challenge, no opportunity, playing in the middle of the table or having the stress of relegation.
“We are in football to live in these moments, in this kind of environment with crowded stadiums and enthusiastic fans, enjoying our football.
“We have a chance to live in this moment on Saturday and we will try to do our best.”
Sam Hutchinson is set to return for Wednesday.
