Coach Lee Bullen hopes Sheffield Wednesday’s development squad will learn from the “sloppy” defensive mistakes they made against Liverpool.

The Owls Under-21s, featuring Matt Young, Rafa Floro and Mani Dieseruvwe, were brushed aside 4-1 by the Premier League outfit at the Kirkby Academy yesterday.

Goals from Jack Dunn (2), Jerome Sinclair and Kevin Stewart helped Liverpool run out comfortable winners, although midfielder Ryan Meadows grabbed a second half consolation for the visitors.

Bullen had no complaints over the loss but felt the friendly was a very worthwhile exercise.

The Scot told The Star: “Liverpool deserved to win. They were better than us, which you probably would expect. The four goals we conceded were very sloppy and avoidable. One or two of our lads played below their standards and we got punished for individual mistakes.

“We had opportunities in the first half but we just didn’t take our chances.

“We were a lot more solid in the second half. We were harder to break down and played percentage football.

“It was a great experience for myself and the team. Hopefully the guys will have learned a lot from the experience. It was a fantastic opportunity to go over and play against a top team.

“It has been a fantastic eye opener for the guys. It comes down to decision making at this level.

“We tried to play short passes and got picked off two or three times rather than mixing things up and playing further forward.”
