There are still 31 matches left to play - and the Owls remain quietly optimistic they can challenge for the Championship automatic promotion berths.

Wednesday dropped to eighth after their controversial 2-0 defeat at Derby County last weekend. Carlos Carvalhal’s men entertain Ipswich Town today trailing leaders Newcastle United by 10 points and second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion by seven.

But key midfielder Barry Bannan, who is in line to make his 50th league appearance for the Owls this afternoon, said: “We want to get promoted.

“For whatever reason, we are sitting eighth at the minute but we are right in the mix with all the other teams. We are right in there and we know we are good enough to be at the top of the league.

“It is just a case of getting back on track and putting a run of results together.

“I think we are one of the best teams in the league but it is about going out there and proving it. Come the end of the season, we should be there or thereabouts.”

The Scotland international wants Wednesday to become more ruthless in the final third.

“We have created a lot of chances and, on other days, teams would have been on the back end of a hiding,” he said. “We have just not been scoring the goals and when you are not scoring, the other team grow into the game and have a spell where they are going to be on top. We have to work better at being more clinical.”
