Serb trialists fail to impress
BRIAN Laws has given the thumbs down to Serbian triallists Boban Maksimovic and Mileta Matovic.
They trained with the Owls on Monday and played for the Reserves yesterday but boss Laws has decided against signing them because he feels they would not improve his squad.
"It's nice to have a look at triallists and no skin off our nose but the two were not fit enough and were no better than what we've got," said Laws.
Teenage striker Matovic scored: he took an easy chance to give the Owls an early lead but he and left winger Maksimovic, who had both been recommended to the club, were unimpressive on the whole.
Laws is now gearing up for a big occasion against Charlton on Saturday: more than 21,000 tickets have been sold already. Add to that some that are being given away to children and their parents and corporate clients, and a crowd of more than 25,000 is already guaranteed.
Prices are 10 (adults) and 5 (concessions). The club are advising fans to buy in advance and say that the game could be a sell-out if sales continue at the current rate.
New chairman Lee Strafford said it was really encouraging that the club can expect their biggest gate of the season. The best so far is 30,441 for the Sheffield derby.
Strafford said: "The new atmosphere surrounding this club has rekindled the interest of many supporters and we aim to grab this opportunity by announcing a more reasonable pricing structure for the remainder of the season on Monday.
"I would like to thank the fans for their show of support for this game and we look forward to having a rousing Hillsborough atmosphere ringing around the stadium."
Meanwhile, Laws has revealed that he does not expect Deon Burton to play on Saturday: "It was part of the agreement between us and Charlton at the time he joined them on loan that if they signed him fully (which happened] he could not play against us this season."
