Jose Semedo knew it would be hard for him to earn a place in the Owls side this season.
He was prepared to be patient and was determined to be ready if an opportunity arose. The philosophy paid off when he was unexpectedly picked to play against Burnley.
As far as he is concerned, he has kept himself fit and capable of producing the form that made him a first-team regular first under Gary Megson then under Dave Jones, up to last November.
“After last season, it was a good break.” he told the Green ‘Un. “I prepared my mind; I knew it would be tough to get in the team.
“My way is to work hard every day and try to get the chance.”
It came when Giles Coke dropped out because of illness.
“I wasn’t supposed to start the game,”recalls Semedo. “The manager told me in the morning that Coke was ill and I was going to play.
“I think I am training well and and working hard every day. I’m not doing anything different from what I did before.
“”It was special [to play], because it was a long time since I had felt the atmosphere and smelled the grass from minute one to the end.
“Unfortunately we lost the game, which we didn’t deserve, when you look at the number of times we got in their box.
“ They got in twice and scored two. Take away that two-minute spell, and we were on top: that made us proud and left us looking forward to the next game.”
