Patience pays off as Owls relish Simek return

SHEFFIELD Wednesday say they are looking forward to Frank Simek having a good pre-season and staking a claim once again for a first-team challenge.

They insist they were right not to push the American last season as he worked his way back after more than a year out follow a serious ankle injury.

Now they are looking forward to the right-back joining in at the start of pre-season work with everyone else and putting himself in the first-team frame.

"There was a situation last season where Frank returned to action and then, because of an injury crisis, he had to play again four days later. We really didn't want him to, but he had to," said Owls assistant boss Russ Wilcox.

"As a result, he picked up a strain, which is the sort of thing that can happen when a player has been out for a long time. He got right again towards the end of the season and he did figure at times but we were right not to push him.

"Frank will be back with us when we report back and we need him to have a really good pre-season."

Simek was injured in December 2007 at Crystal Palace. He was a substitute last October and then made appearances against South-ampton and QPR last December before the hamstring injury.

He was unable to resume until February and was involved in the matchday squad in all but a couple the remaining 13 games of the season.
