Owls must bounce back
SHEFFIELD Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has challenged his ambitious side to bounce back from yesterday's "disappointing" loss to League One strugglers Brentford.
The Owls stay top of the table despite a 1-0 loss at Griffin Park in front of the Sky Sports television cameras.
And Irvine wants to make sure his side respond in the best possible way by beating Carlisle United at home on Saturday.
"It's vitally important that we respond in the right way," stressed Irvine. "We can't let this result affect us, we have to bounce back.
"We were going to lose some games during the season and if one game that you lose and you don't play so well has a negative effect on the next game, then you're going to have a bad season."
The Owls had long spells of possession against the Bees, but the visitors failed to put any of them away as they slipped to their first defeat to their opponents for six years.
"We didn't pass the ball well enough but we had good possession of the ball," added Irvine. "We huffed and puffed, we had a lot of possession and never really created any clearcut chances.
"We didn't play with any real quality and that's why we didn't create very much."
But despite defeat Irvine has been impressed with the promising start of his team who are one point clear of Carlisle with ten points at the League One summit. "If I'd have been offered top of the league after five games I would have taken it," admitted Irvine. "I was obviously hoping we'd get something here, but we haven't done.
"But we can't let this defeat suggest that we've had a terrible start to the season because we haven't."
