Sheffield Wednesday return home today after a successful pre-season camp in Austria, which saw them end with a goalless draw against Russian Premier League team FC Volga last night.

The Owls have used their week in the mountains to have two training stints a day and begin to foster the kind of team spirit that manager Gary Megson hopes will see them return to the Championship next May.

Wednesday showed a willingness to work hard in their first match of the summer against Volga.

Their efforts were nearly rewarded late in the game when Liam Palmer was brought down in the penalty area.

However, no foul was given by the referee.

Palmer is one of the players to arrive back in Sheffield with his reputation enhanced.

Experienced centre-half Rob Jones told The Star that the 19-year-old midfielder had stood out during the gruelling running sessions put on by Megson and his staff.

Former Owls winger Etienne Esajas has joined Paolo Di Canio’s League Two Swindon Town on trial. The Dutchman made 60 appearances in his three-year spell at Hillsborough.
