Owls takeover 'still on track'

THE Sheffield Wednesday takeover bid is said to be still on track.

However, as the saga continues to drag on, there are suggestions that it may finally be close to a conclusion.

Lancashire businessman Geoff Sheard gave the takeover talk extra impetus with his meeting last week with former Owls chairman Dave Allen.

He agreed, in principle, to the sale of his 10 per cent shareholding.

but demanded proof of funds before doing so.

Matters remain at a delicate stage but sources close to Sheard insist that things are progressing and that "everything is on track."

There are also suggestions from across the Pennines that things could be reaching a conclusion quite soon.

Owls followers are certainly looking for a solution some time soon, their patience having been tested by months of takeover talk and prospects of a successful outcome.

Additional pressure was put on the Sheard bid when the club appointed financial consultants last month and instructed them to "actively seek" a buyer as the Sheard talks dragged on.

Alan Shearer's name was pitched into the mix last week, suggesting he was being lined up as manager.

The former Newcastle and Blackburn man denied any knowledge of interest from any consortium although reports say he would remain a target.

Wednesday will play their Carling Cup, first round tie at home to Rotherham United on Tuesday, August 12. Sheffield United's home tie with Port Vale will be played the next day - Wednesday August 13.
