Owls manager pulls his players into line

BRIAN Laws watched his Sheffield Wednesday side continue their successful pre-season last night and then predicted the Owls have the ability to beat anybody on their day.

However, following the 4-1 win at newly-promoted League One MK Dons, Laws was also determined to pull his players into line.

"I have explained the situation of this football club to the players and told them not to get carried away by it," he said.

"At the same time I know I have the players with the ability to score goals and to beat anyone, on the day, we come up against. If I had millions to spend... well, it's irrelevant.

"What is important is to steer clear of injuries. Last season we missed promotion by 15 points or five wins and we can all think of a game we should never have lost."

Of last night's performance against the League One newcomers, Laws added:"It was a good team effort because for the first 10 minutes we were all at sea.

The Dons were tougher opposition than the two Dutch clubs we played. They passed the ball well and were a serious threat but after they scored we had most of the play and looked a good side going forward.

"Compared to last season, when the strikers couldn't buy a goal, we've now scored nine in three games with four from Deon Burton. I can't ask for anymore from him."

Akpo Sodje made his return to action after being out since January and was eased bakc in, playing for the opening 45 minutes before being replaced by Marcus Tudgay.

"Deon and Akpo are looking good and are becoming a formidable twosome," said Laws."It's early days yet but this is a good start to our pre-season as I aim for fitness and confidence."

Wednesday take a side, including some of the first team squad, to Stocksbridge Park Steels tonight.
