Owls Ful of hope

BRIAN Laws today hailed the Owls' FA Cup draw as one of the best that the club could have had.

The third round tie against Fulham was welcomed by the Wednesday manager because it is at Hillsborough and is an attractive one against Premier League opposition, but is also "winnable," he said.

It is also another chance for the Owls to take a Premier scalp after they went close to doing so last season against Derby.

"First and foremost, you want a home draw. Anything after that is a bonus, and I think this is a great one for us and a winnable game," said Laws.

"If we keep our good home record going, Fulham will fear us, that's for sure.

"I don't think we could have asked for a better draw than this. Fulham are doing reasonably well in the Premier League, halfway up the table, and have some really good players; it's an attractive game, but being at home gives us that extra incentive.

"We are always confident at home and I think we can do well against them."

The tie will take place on the weekend of January 3 and will be the first time the clubs have met since they were both in the same division in the 2000-01 season. It was a 3-3 draw at Hillsborough and a 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Tony McMahon has gone back to Middlesbrough with him and Wednesday expressing mutual thanks after his three-month loan and the first senior goal of his career in Saturday's 3-2 win against Norwich - the Owls' seventh consecutive victory against the Canaries.

Laws said: "Tony has been outstanding, a very good professional and a credit to Middlesbrough. He goes from here with our blessing."

McMahon said: "The fans have been brilliant. They'll always have a place in my heart. I'd just like to say thank you.

"The gaffer has been brilliant for me as well. All the boys here love him, and you can see why.

"From day one, he made me feel welcome; he allowed me to play my own game and gave me a few tips on the way - he told me he was a decent full-back himself! It helped me to improve my game. I'd like to thank Sheffield Wednesday for giving me this opportunity."
