Owls eye move for striker

SHEFFIELD Wednesday look set to try to bring West Brom striker Bartosz Slusarski back to Hillsborough.

The Owls are already planning their strategy for when the transfer window opens in January - and Slusarski is believed to be a target.

He had a successful loan spell at Hillsborough last season and his contract at The Hawthorns expires next year.

The Pole was not in the Baggies' first-team picture last season and is not in their current plans as they fight a Premier League campaign.

Barring an emergency, Wednesday are likely to have to let someone go before they can bring in another player, whether on loan or in a full deal.

But they are already looking at the long-term picture, and strikers Leon Clarke and Deon Burton are among several players whose contracts run out next summer and who may have to be replaced.

It is feasible that if any out-of-contract players are wanted by other clubs in January and they are not central to the Owls' plans then they would be allowed to leave.

But the club are not intending to sell key players.

Kenny Lunt's exit will not pave the way for new arrivals as the Owls are subsidising his wages while he remains on loan at Crewe.

Akpo Sodje's injury troubles, which began almost a year ago, could be another factor in the possible signing of Slusarski. Sodje faces another lay-off because of a torn hamstring.

Another former Owls loan striker, Leon Best, returns to Hillsborough with Coventr tomorrow, after receiving stick from some Sky Blues fans recently and unsure who will give him the better reception tomorrow.

He said: "The fans up there are very good fans, probably the best fans I have played under.

"It would be funny if I went up there and got booed by my own team's fans and cheered by the opposition."
