Owls boss to make decision on trialist France

RIGHT winger Ryan France is on the verge of D-day in his bid to earn a Hillsborough contract.

Brian Laws has revealed that a decision will be made this week on the Sheffield-born trialist.

France played in three of the four games in Malta - a greater involvement than that of trialist striker Etienne Barbara, who has already been turned down after figuring in two tour matches.

Laws is non-commital so far on France's future but says: "We have been pleased with his contribution."

France was offered the trial after being released by Hull City - for whom he played in each of the four divisions.

During his career he has played in various positions, including right back, but Laws sees him as a right winger.

Established wide man Jermaine Johnson was due to rejoin the squad today as they got back down to work at Middlewood after a week in Malta.

Johnson has been on international duty with Jamaica all summer, for a programme of training, friendlies, and Gold Cup games in America.

Jamaica were knocked out of the Cup 10 days ago but he was allowed a break last week before teaming up with the Owls.

Said Laws: "The other players had a few weeks off this summer but JJ hadn't had a break so it was common sense to give him one and see him when we get back from Malta."

The Owls' first domestic friendly takes place tomorrow at Hartlepool (7.30pm) - where ex-Owls boss Chris Turner is in charge of the team, with a title of director of sport, and where his former Wednesday No 2 Colin West is a coach.

Wednesday also have a reserves/academy fixture at Stocksbridge on Wednesday (7.30) and a Hillsborough clash with Hull on Saturday (3pm).
