Owls behind you, Woody!

OWLS club captain Steve Watson is backing team skipper Richard Wood to continue giving full commitment on the field and says that the team's togetherness has not been affected by his transfer request.

Watson also believes that the affair could act as a spur to his colleague's form and that the 23-year-old's performance at Swansea last week was his best of the season.

Wednesday players remain right behind their team captain, and the squad's spirit "has not been affected at all," says the club skipper.

"It's given the lads something to wind him up about!" said Watson

"This sort of thing happens hundreds of times at hundreds of other clubs.

"Woody is young; maybe he was badly advised. He's the best trainer every day, and has continued to be since this happened.

"He'll go on the pitch with the same attitude, week in, week out.

"It's a small squad; if we're to get anywhere we have to stick together, fans as well.

"The lads think the world of Woody, still. We're 100 per cent behind him; he's our team captain, and will be for the foreseeable future."

Wednesday turned down a bid by Coventry for Wood after also rejecting a transfer request from him.

Watson feels that Wood's display at Swansea was evidence that his game has not suffered: "I think that was Woody's best performance of the season. Hopefully this will all kick-start a good run for him.

"Obviously he had a reason for the transfer request; he never really discussed it with us.

"The one thing you have to realise is that it will not affect his 100 per cent attitude."

Etienne Esajas has been voted as the fans' Player of the Month for August. Marcus Tudgay was second and Sean McAllister third.

*Brian Laws is looking to northern Europe for possible signings.

"I took in a game in Denmark to look at a player. In Denmark, in particular, the contracts tend to run out towards the end of December. I've got to make sure I cover all avenues, whether it be loan or permanent" he said.
