The takeover of Sheffield Wednesday this week has been met with cautious optimism by the club’s long-suffering support.
MP and lifelong Owls fan David Blunkett was quick to offer his thanks to Milan Mandaric for his stewardship of the club.
“We owe Milan Mandaric a deep debt of gratitude,” he said. “Not only has he restored stability and security to the club both financially and in terms of its standing but has also brought real commitment as a football fan of considerable standing.
“I know he will be sorely missed and I hope there will be an opportunity to have an orderly and sufficiently timely handover to provide the continuity required and to allow for the progress that he has overseen to continue into a new season, where all our hopes will rest on sufficient investment to allow us to aspire to the Premier League, where the club belongs.”
We also spoke to supporters at Hillsborough yesterday to hear their views.
Ryan Hardy, 28, Ecclesfield: “It’s brilliant news if he can take over where Mandaric left off. I don’t think there’s as much scepticism this time because when Mandaric took over we were in a real rut and he’s left us in a good position.”
Tom Rowland, 69, Stannington: “If he wants us to get into the Premier League he’s going to have to spend money on players. They’ll have to match the millions of the clubs coming down.”
Paul Watkinson, 47, York: “Let’s hope this guy has got plenty of money to spend . If he has it’ll be absolutely fantastic for the club.”
Frank Ingram, 79, Norton: “It’s a question of wait and see at the minute. If he spends some money, then all well and good.”
Liam Wilks, 25, Handsworth: “I can’t wait for it to get started. I heard he put quite a bit into his French team and that’d be nice for us as well.”
K Oldfield, 87, Darnall; “We want a better year this year than the past and I hope this man is going to give us it. We always want better, us Wednesdayites.”
