No guarantees from home run, says Irvine

WEDNESDAY are being warned that they must view their triple Hillsborough test as a big challenge and not as a trouble-free way to tot up another nine points towards safety.

Manager Alan Irvine is pointing out that it is a feat whenever any Championship team scores a clean sweep in a bloc of home fixtures, so demanding is the division.

He believes that good results from tonight's clash with Blackpool and next week's visits from Doncaster and Ipswich cannot be taken for granted.

"It's very rare to win three home games in a row, especially in such a short space of time," said Irvine. "It's rare to win three in row, home or away. I don't think people should assume we will pick up lots and lots of points.

"Obviously that's our aim. But we can't go into these three games thinking 'what a great opportunity to get out of the relegation battle', because the Championship is too tough a division for us to make any assumptions.

"Blackpool are a good side and play similar whether they are at home or away; Doncaster are capable of going anywhere and winning."

Captain Darren Purse said: "f we can get nine points from these three, it would be unbelievable.

"You don't get those points without at least putting in the effort we have put in so far, under the new manager. That's something we need to keep doing."

The skipper would regard a haul of six or seven points from the next three games as respectable."If we can do well in these three home games, it will move us further away from the relegation zone."

Others in the Championship survival scrap play tonight but Irvine says that if the Owls reach 53 points then other clubs' fortunes will be irrelevant.

"If we get seven more wins it doesn't matter what anybody else does."
