Midfield star urged to prove worth

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson has challenged midfielder Liam Palmer to be more consistent to fulfil his undoubted potential at Hillsborough.

Megson recalled the Scottish under-21 international, a graduate of Wednesday’s youth system, at Scunthorpe United and he delivered an assured display in his sixth league start of the campaign.

But Megson said: “If you look at what he [Liam] does on the training ground, he shouldn’t be playing at this level. He’s got to take what he does at Middlewood into matches. Against Scunthorpe he did some of that.

“His performance, and the fact he came into a game that we won, will have done him the world of good.”

Although delighted to get back to winning ways at Glanford Park, Megson said Scunthorpe’s consolation strike took some of the shine off the victory.

“It should have been a lot easier,” admitted Megson. “Once we’re 3-0 up, we should settle on the ball and try to pick people off a bit. That’s one of the things we are trying to drum into the players: that little things make a massive difference.

“Their goal took a bit of gloss away from winning away from home.”

Wednesday recorded their seventh win on the road in League One courtesy of goals from Chris O’Grady (2) and Jermaine Johnson.

I have always like LP, when he returned from his U21 stint earlier this year he has great things said about him but still never got much play, I would like to see him start more and Lowe.
