Meticulous Megson in no hurry

Careful consideration: Owls manager Gary Megson is analysing his options in the transfer market ahead of a planned promotion push next season

PRE-season training is looming large on the horizon at Hillsborough - but Gary Megson is still no closer to finalising his squad for the start of the 2011/12 season.

The Sheffield Wednesday manager is in no rush to complete his summer shopping and is meticulously weighing up his options in the transfer market.

So far, Megson has brought in two new recruits but he is acutely aware further reinforcements are required to make the club’s promotion dream a reality.

It is no secret the Owls chief wants to sign Jose Semedo from Charlton Athletic. Megson has stated he wants someone who can perform a disciplined role in the side by sitting in front of the back four and breaking up opposition’s attacks. He views Semedo, who is a free agent, as a person capable of acting as the team’s midfield enforcer.

While a defensive midfielder is one position Megson is seeking to rectify during the off season, his resources up front are slim. With Neil Mellor poised to return to Preston North End shortly following the conclusion of his loan spell, it will leave Megson with just two recognised forwards in Gary Madine and Clinton Morrison on his books.

Discussions are ongoing between the Owls and Mellor’s representatives, with the Sheffield-born striker admitting he is open to a permanent move to the South Yorkshire club. However, a deal is unlikely to happen unless Mellor reduces his wage demands. He is understood to be on around £9,000 a week at Deepdale.

It would be a major coup for Megson to bring back Mellor, who plundered 20 goals on a season-long loan deal last term. The Owls boss is expected to sign a minimum of two new strikers before August, having offloaded Paul Heffernan. He may look to buy an experienced player who has a proven track record at League One level.

The club have been linked with Trinidad and Tobago international Jason Scotland, who has fallen down the pecking order at Ipswich Town. Scotland was instrumental in Swansea City winning promotion to the Championship in 2008.

If Wednesday fail to agree terms with Mellor, the pressure will fall on Megson to locate a suitable replacement. Mellor and the departed Tommy Miller contributed 31 goals in all competitions last term.

For Wednesday to challenge in the upper echelons of the division, Megson knows every outfield player must chip in with goals.

May I suggest Megson looks for a goalscorer with a track record in the Championship rather than League 1.I believe the Championship requires a higher level of ability than League 1 since defenders are better. It's alright recognising midfielders need to chip in with goals but having the capability is an entirely different matter..

The iphone spell checker is one of lifes stress givingn joys. It does not seem to highlight or change anything as you type, but replaces words at random as soon as you press send. Think sone of design was done by the Star's moderators
