Megson wants a fair fight

GARY Megson has spelt out his belief in fair play as the visit of Yeovil to Hillsborough tomorrow reminds the Owls boss of one of the most controversial goals of the season.
In the game between the clubs at Huish Park the ball was supposed to be returned to Wednesday after a stoppage but Kieran Agard chased it and ran through to score.
Wednesday were enraged both by Agard’s action and by the refusal of the then Glovers manager Terry Skiverton to gift the Owls an equaliser.
Skiverton - now assistant to new boss Gary Johnson - said at the time that he thought of doing so but decided against it because Jose Semedo had verbally abused him.
Megson says it was a “cock and bull story” about Semedo and he insists there is no place for what was allowed to happen at Yeovil - though it did not stop the Owls from winning 3-2.
The Owls boss commented: “The kid shouldn’t have chased the ball down. Once he did, he’s made a mistake.
“I can guarantee you if it happened with one of my players I would bring them all over to the touchline and we’d let the opposition score.
“We all want to win but we don’t want to win that badly.
“I’m not being glib; I’ve already done it. When I took over at Leicester I let Forest score after five seconds because a game had been stopped because of a heart attack for Clive Clarke and it would have been unfair not to set off from the same position as when the first game had been abandoned.” Forest had been winning 1-0 when Leicester player Clarke had a heart attack at half-time and the match was abandoned.
Megson felt that Yeovil should have been similarly sporting. “But their manager at the time didn’t want to do it,” he said. “He came up with some cock and bull story that Jose Semedo had verbally abused him. Jose doesn’t even know how to do that even if he tried.
“It also resulted in Rob Jones smashing his nose and it threw us out of our stride for five to 10 minutes. They all lost their heads a bit and that carried on into the tunnel a bit.
“It didn’t galvanise us. They’re already galvanised, they’re all together. It didn’t really make a huge difference other than it gave them one goal and while we were rattled it gave them another. But it should never happen.”
Agard’s goal was an equaliser after Owls loan striker David McGoldrick scored on his debut. Agard also put his team 2-1 up. But Julian Bennett and Gary Madine gave the Owls victory.
That contentious goal also resulted in Rob Jones breaking his nose in a collision with Richard O’Donnell as they tried to prevent it, and Jones is central to one of several decisions that Megson must make tomorrow.
He may well opt to retain Miguel Llera, who came in for Jones at MK Dons.
“Miguel did brilliantly at MK Dons,” said Megson, “His passing from the back was exceptional, and he had a really good game with his defending. We’ve been really pleased with him.”
Megson must also assess whether he can find a place for Chris Lines, who has been a midfield regular but was rested when seven changes were made at Blackpool. He did not regain his place at MK Dons, however.
Megson explained: “Because David Prutton did so well at Blackpool, he stayed in. He did even better at MK Dons.
“I’ve spoken to two players. There are going to be horses for courses a bit, but there’s no sacred cow.
“If someone thinks they can perform below par and definitely be playing next week, they’re taking a chance, because we now have a much stronger squad than we had 12 months ago.
“They realise they can’t all play. I spoke to one of them who wasn’t in the team but couldn’t understand why he wasn’t sub. I explained it’s not what you might view as the five next best players; someone might be carrying a knock; players who can play in more than one position tend to make themselves better subs, if that’s the right description.”
Jermaine Johnson was on the bench for the cup tie and at MK Dons and will be among those hoping for a recall to the starting line-up.
Teams and ref
OWLS (possible): Bywater, Buxton, Batth, Llera, R Johnson, Bostock, Semedo, Prutton, J Johnson, Madine, O’Grady (4-4-2).
Glovers (possible): Walker, Ayling, N’Gala, Hinds, Dixon, Edwards, Upson, Parrett, G Williams, Obika, A Williams (4-4-2)
Mark Brown (East Yorkshire): Sheffield Wednesday must hope that this official is not a jinx on the club. He was the man in the middle for the 1-0 home defeat by Notts County last season and then took charge the 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth earlier this season.
One to watch
Striker Andy Williams has scored four goals in his last five appearances - including both in last Saturday’s 2-1 home win against Preston. He is Yeovil’s top scorer with six in the league and one in the cup. The 25-year-old joined the Glovers in 2010 after three years at Bristol Rovers, Chris Lines’former club.
History lesson
The clubs have met only five times - three in the league and two in the cup. Wednesday have won three and drawn two, so Yeovil have yet to get off the mark, and they were beaten 3-2 at home by the Owls in September.
