IF only Sheffield Wednesday had a team to match their loyal supporters.

It is something Owls boss Gary Megson is determined to find a solution for to turn the club into creditable promotion contenders.

Wednesday finished in second position in the average home attendances behind promoted Southampton. At Hillsborough, the club averaged 17,817, 4,000 below the second-placed Saints’ figure at Saint Mary’s Stadium.

The two biggest gates Wednesday attracted were for the first and last matches of the campaign. More than 23,000 fans came to the curtain-raiser against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Against Exeter City, 21,085 packed into the ground.

Wednesday frequently sold out their away allocations during the 2010/11 season.

Despite having nothing to play for at Bristol Rovers last month, the club took more than 1,600 supporters.

It is that level of backing from the terraces which Megson will hope can inspire Wednesday next year.
