McMahon recalled by Middlesbrough
WEDNESDAY on-loan full back Tony McMahon has been recalled by Middlesbrough.
It follows his sending-off at Barnsley and suspension for three matches.
Boro were entitled to recall him at 24 hours' notice and have exercised that right.
A return to Hillsborough is not ruled out for the defender, however.
He has served only 65 days of the 93 days permitted for emergency loans.
If Middlesbrough agree, he could come back to Hillsborough next month for another loan spell, of 28 days, after he has served his ban.
Owls boss Brian Laws said: "Tony has been excellent...we are grateful for what he has done.
"If Boro do not need him in November then we will try to bring Tony back so that he can complete the 93-day loan period he is entitled to serve with us."
Earlier, McMahon apologised to Wednesday and their fans for getting sent off at Barnsley.
He revealed that it was the first dismissal of his league career and he is vowing never to repeat the sort of tackle that left the Owls down to 10 men from the 34th minute.
"I'm disappointed; I feel like I let the team down, the manager and the coaches, and, to those 6,000 fans who travelled , I'd like to make a personal apology to every one of them," the loan defender told The Star.
"Nothing like that will happen again.
"The biggest penalty for me is having to sit out the next three games, which will kill me.
"It's a lonely place, sitting in the dressing room when you've been sent off; it's horrible."
McMahon's tackle on Rob Kozluk was condemned by Barnsley manager Simon Davey, who said that damage could have been done if contact had been made. Owls boss Brian Laws admitted that the referee was right to send off the Wednesday defender.
McMahon reflected: "I made a tackle and the ball went towards their full back (Kozluk). I ran towards him. It was a bit of a lunge, really.
I didn't go to hurt him. I went for the ball. He got out of the way. No contact was made. The ref deemed it was dangerous."
He begins his suspension with tomorrow's match at Birmingham, where Lewis Buxton is set to play at right back, and further defence disruption is threatened by an injury to Mark Beevers.
The centre half has a badly bruised hip and is rated doubtful.
Although Laws was initially optimistic that Richard Wood (groin) and James O'Connor (hamstring) would be fit after missing the Barnsley match, he must still wait for checks on them and Deon Burton (ankle) and Marcus Tudgay (groin).
Meanwhile, Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is optimistic about the fitness of three key players. James McFadden and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie should be back in contention after missing their win over Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace.
Cameron Jerome is also likely to be fit.
