Lowe’s high regard for Wednesday fans

Bury clash: Ryan Lowe up against Danny Batth when the Owls played at Gigg Lane two weeks ago in a duel where there were more away fans than home.

SHEFFIELD Wednesday fans have played a part in Ryan Lowe’s desire to move to Hillsborough.

One of the things that struck Gary Megson in talks with the new arrival was the £100,000 striker’s admiration for the support that the Owls receive.

A 2,600 away following outnumbered home fans when Wednesday played a fortnight ago at Bury - for whom Lowe scored in a 2-1 win.

Megson also feels that the Owls are welcome wherever they go because of the support and revenue they bring, and that their exit from the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy will be regretted by the organisers.

The 3,519 attendance for the match at Bradford included a noisy away contingent of 729.

“The people who run this competition will be disappointed that Wednesday are no longer in it,” says Megson. “Because our support is an absolute boon not only to whatever competition we’re in but also to football in general.

“One of the things that Ryan Lowe was talking about was our supporters.

“He’s looking forward to meeting Tango!”

“It was quite an eye-opener, listening to him talk as someone who was a member of the opposition at Bury and thought that our support was a huge boost to them.”

It is further evidence that the atmosphere created by the Owls’ large followings can actually inspire the opposition as well as Wednesday.

Lowe’s mission now is to show Hillsborough fans what he can do - though they got a good idea when he headed the first goal at Gigg Lane. The fans gave me a tingle when when Bury played Wednesday.

“Hopefully they will cheer me on, I can cheer them on and we can enjoy some success together. It’s the fans, the club, the manager and the chairman that has attracted me here.

“The history this club’s got is phenomenal. My aim is to get us out of League One, then the Championship and back into the Premier League.”

The completion of his transfer was announced while Wednesday’s match at Bradford was in progress and they were courting controversy after taking off three first-teamers in the first 17 minutes, to rest them, having been compelled by the JP Trophy rules to start with six first-teamers.

Megson says: “I think it’s a bit unfair that people dictate what you have to do but, fine, those are the rules, but you don’t have to finish with six.

“I will always do what I think is best for Wednesday. “It wasn’t intended to be any slight on the competition; it’s fantastic that Johnstone’s Paint sponsor it, but it makes life more difficult.

“We have a squad of 24 senior pros and eight of them were unavailable.”

He said that there were minor problems in addition to those that have affected Jermaine Johnson, Daniel Jones, Jon Otsemobor and Chris O’Grady, and Reda Johnson has been away with Benin.

The Owls also have a big game at Charlton on Monday.

good days those Handsworth, good days not only for you but all of us! Happy days the way they should be again and will be and i am for the first time confident in the men in charge of us. I even flew over big fella for the first 4 weeks of the season. I wanted to see if you get me. I did see and quite frankly can answer any of your concerns right now. I understand why people have there thoughts but thats because i understand people good, bad, weird, polite, rich, poor. Look best i can say is we have got lucky, as not many people with money would go near the mess that was at hillsborough mainly financial but also managerial, we got manager that dropped an income to come and rescue us and i can tell you Mr M has also lost alot of his end of year profits in all business. BUT they will stay the clause... Megson would have left if we didnt win that last game i rekon in his head but MM talked him round before the game win or lose! If he leaves.... mate he cares, he knows what he has on his plate and hes obviously lacking in areas of the field. He's the best we're going to get and his decisions i back with all my heart. I owe these lads that! and personally all of the wendesday fans.. not all agree BUT i understand why they dont. But personally after what i saw in my visit "HATS OFF" Love wednesday right now. we're watching the beginning not the end and sometimes it takes awhile to get the ball moving especially when its rolling the wrong way. My 2 Bob quid buck. there it is. please send all hate mail to my missus Her name i ugla and she lifts heavy things lol

88 Barklyowl I lived a good life. Never over indulged in anything. Would I think have been fitter if I had not followed the Owls as I am sure some of the games have aged me. Nweverthless all worth it. Will never forget Sheridans goal in 1991 against Man Utd in the Rumbelows Cup Final I had a wonderful; seat near the Royal Box with my mates. Best £38 I have ever spent

Still on about the Wednesday support "inspiring" the opposition.Must be a disadvantage, then.Funny it was never mentioned for 50 of the 60 years I've been following the club.Makes you wonder how Manchester Utd ,Liverpool etc. ever win a game.
