Lions eye up Purse move

OWLS captain Darren Purse could be set to join Millwall before the January transfer window shuts.

The Championship side want a centre half and are understood to have expressed an interest in the 33-year-old Londoner who supported them as a youngster.

Meanwhile, Wednesday are believed to have made an inquiry about Brentford left winger Myles Weston as they bid to add to the four players already signed this month.

Manager Alan Irvine has said that the current priority is building up the squad rather than letting players go.

But Purse's contract is due to expire this summer and perhaps the club will not want to stand in his way if there is an earlier opportunity for him, especially now that three young defenders have moved into Hillsborough, Reda Johnson, Michael Morrison and Mark Reynolds.

Morrison, a right-side centre half, would be able to fill Purse's position, but so far has been needed at right back, with Jon Otsemobor and Lewis Buxton injured.

Buxton is only just back in full training and it is not yet known whether he will be ready to go straight into Saturday's game at Leyton Orient, one of Purse's former clubs. Purse signed for the Owls on a free after leaving Cardiff in 2009.

The skipper received his ninth booking of the season last Saturday over the foul that led to a Charlton penalty. He will get a two-match ban if he collects another by April 9.

Weston is a fast, direct winger, aged 22, which puts him in the same age bracket as the other signings so far.

He caught the eye in Brentford's televised match against Exeter on Monday.

Formerly Notts County's Player of the Year, he was signed from the Magpies 18 months ago and cost 25,000 plus a further 50,000 in add-on payments.

He remains under contract beyond this year and would cost a fee.

Weston started out as a youth player at Charlton and after a loan spell at Notts County joined them on a free in the summer of 2007.
