Let Tudgay talk Sheffield Wednesday

MARCUS Tudgay would love a chance to talk to Burnley about a move to the Premier League, claims his agent.

It is the latest twist in the saga involving the Wednesday star, his agent, Darryl Powell, and the newly-promoted Clarets.

The Owls hoped that the affair would die down after they rejected a verbal offer from Turf Moor and insisted that the player is not for sale.

But Powell, a former Wednesday player, has now said: "He (Tudgay) is aware of Burnley's interest because it came out publicly. He would love the chance to meet with the manager and talk."

The Owls are bound to feel that such publicity goes against the game's code as Tudgay is under contract to them for another year.

The club have yet to give a fresh response but will be unhappy; they have already accused Burnley and Powell of an attempt to unsettle the player.

SHEFFIELD United and Sheffield Wednesday are working on a joint gesture to attract World Cup games to the city - using their first derby day of the 2009-10 season to showcase their partnership.

Wednesday have also turned down a 1.5 million verbal offer from Burnley - though they say they have not had a formal, written bid - and have insisted that Tudgay is not for sale.

But Clarets manager Owen Coyle expressed his admiration for Tudgay. He said Burnley felt the offer was a fair one and it remained in force if the Owls wanted to accept it.

It appears that Burnley have tried to test Wednes-day's resolve to keep a player who could go for nothing next year if he was to choose to leave at the end of his existing contract.

The Owls will also be annoyed because the Burnley affair has arisen after the player agreed a new three-year contract at Hillsborough.

It looks as if publicity about Burnley's interest - in which Powell has played a part - has resulted in a delay in the formalities being completed.

Despite the agent's claim, it is likely that Wednesday will still seek to settle Tudgay down at Hillsbor-ough and hope that he will sign his new deal.

Laws also said last week: "We said right from the start that we were not interested in selling Marcus. You can understand the lad wants to play in the Premier League, but we're not a selling club and he's one of our best players.

"The best player in the world has his price - you only have to look at 80m for Ronaldo - but Burnley were nowhere near a figure we would have considered for Tudgay."
