Leaky defence cost us again, moans Megson
Dejected: Owls pair of Jose Semedo and Jon Otsemobor trail off at the final whistle. Picture: steve ellis
GARY Megson has bemoaned his team’s defending at set pieces with Stevenage having plundered victory at Hillsborough last night after Exeter beat the Owls with two free kicks last Saturday.
Megson also revealed that John Bostock and Ryan Lowe would have started last night’s game but were ruled out by illness and a calf injury respectively.
The Wednesday manager said: “I would imagine that in the last six games we have cost ourselves a minimum of eight points through failing to defend set pieces properly. It wasn’t because the opposition played any better than us, or opened us up and created chances, because they haven’t.
“We have players who individually are not doing what’s expected of them at set pieces, which are a huge part of football.
“It’s galling because we write it up on the board where they should be. We practice set-pieces and ram it in to them how important they are” said Megson, who had a minor confrontation with opposition manager Gary Smith last night.
The Owls boss exonerated Rob Jones and refused to name the culprits: “Everybody in our dressing room knows who it is, because we write it on the board. If people aren’t going to do...they’ll come out of the team; you have to be able to trust players to do the right thing.
“We had 11 corners. We didn’t attack the ball like they did. Rob should score in the first half. We had 10 shots to their two. We had some good opportunities, great strikes, but when somebody gets a lead it’s acceptable for them to get eight or nine behind the ball. Stevenage have some big strong players and are well organised, and their keeper made some good saves.”

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:35 AMMy UTO1 had a leaky moment last night! Hes still in those pull ups nappys just for bed time but he had too much orange juice and it leaked. What a mess! At 13 years old i would have hoped he was past that stage, but i cant complain as hes still my precious. Even with all his faults! XX

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 11:14 PMMancturd what a pathetic cretin you are........ Your fellow fans must be so proud that you call yourself a blunt. Your club has lost about £13 million a year for the past 3 or 4 years. That's money McSue has to put in to stop the massive from folding. He gambled before remember and LOST, hence the sale of most of the assets he borrowed on to make his share holding look more attractive to a seller, who never came along!! Remember the hotel.... SOLD. remember the office block.... SOLD. You have nothing left. So this season is a gamble, a massive one at that and if you do go up but do not make the Premiership you're screwed. How long will Evans be there? How long will all the other prospects be there, especially if you go up and the vultures will be circling looking to pick them off on the cheap, and your little selling club will sell to any one!! Evans would've gone by now if it wasn't for that upcoming court case. So I'd hush up if I was one of the deluded ones. Like what's been said before, you have a massive wage bill and in all probabilities you shouldn't be in this league at all but the same team has taken you into second and you're all getting giddy....... WHY????????? UTO

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 02:56 PMIs MM still convalescing? According to the Y.Post he was supposed to be making a statement to the press yesterday. Is he pondering his options following Huddersfield's outrageous sacking of their manager, or has someone been watching his recent plightour poor form and thought that this is the time to make him an offer!

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 10:14 AM@89: Not quite sure that follows. Abramovic isn't a Sarf Landaner but he hasn't done Chelsea any harm. How many Sheffielders are there with multi-millions to invest?

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 07:34 AMKeep Calm lads..... 18 months ago we were at deaths door MM bought us, saved us, and has gradually turned the club around. For me I would love promotion this season but if we miss out so what. I would much rather be in this position of building a team within budget with achievable and sustainable wages than have MM splash cash all over the place which we cannot afford. Think about it Owls fans look where overspending got us before and look what its done at the lane ? Like it or not at S2 they have a HUGE debt issue to manage and sooner or later it will catch up with them. I'm okay with this season and I don't care what the scrubbers at the Lane do and as the poster below says if anyone can screw it up its United :-)

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 06:24 AMAgree with the real SCB. We have come a long way in a year. MM has put money into the club. It's not all doom and gloom. We still can get 2nd place. If anyone can mess up the pigs can, they usually do then blame someone or anyone for thier mistakes

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 11:37 PMMancblade. you dont understand. im the famous steelcityblue and i talk CR@.P for a living. Mandaric is my friend. We have dinner parties at each other houses. i take his dog a walk.I would even sleep with his dog if he asked me to! I worship him. He tells me things and plans to plough 50 miilion into our club soon. Or is it 50 pence? Im an old LINCOLN5HITE SADDO WITH HALF A BRAIN you see and i find it difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction sometimes. I also remembered that i WOULD swap most things between our clubs. Ground, Training facilities, Chairman, even most of the team, all better at the Lane, all geared up for a higher level.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 10:57 PMSCB: Make that 2 points and 2 games in hand with a far superior GD. The abyss you mention im guessing is the same one you foretold when we got relegated oh and the same one when the JTW opened. We are taking a gamble this season with wages and the squad to go up fair enough and most if not all of our debt is owed to our Owner who IS a Sheffielder and a Blade. We arnt the team with an owner who is currently deciding whether to walk away from football or not. .

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 10:30 PMTo be fair guys, and yes we are frustrated because not too long ago we enjoyed 10 years in the prem, Europe etc..and looked down on our small neighbours. Putting it in to perspective, 12 months ago we were £35m in debt and up sh1t creek. Today, we are 3rd, debt free and very capable of auto promotion. Come on guys, MM has put millions in, who amongst us would throw £10-20m at a football club, ( ok any true owl would) but MM is serbian not Sheffieldbian. In comparrison, our Blunt friends are £millions in debt..the abyss becons, even if they are a massive 1 point head.....big deal.. would I swap our set and infrastructure for theres? like phuck I would

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 10:24 PMNeed a goal scorer PDQ. Madine not up to the job. As for the defence , instead of drawing pictures on a board take them all to a Sunday league game, they may learn something. Defeat on Sat and the week after will be the end, . What a good site for Morrisons or Tesco.
