Laws in rallying call: 'Let's make it 100 not out'
BRIAN Laws today celebrated the second anniversary of his appointment as Wednesday manager and targeted a victory on Saturday as the perfect way to mark 100 games in charge.
Laws, whose reign began on November 6, 2006, reaches a century of matches with the Hillsborough derby against Doncaster.
He said: "I'm honoured that I've achieved 100 games and two years; Let's make it 100 not out on Saturday."
Laws looked back on a "rollercoaster" of a ride since he succeeded Paul Sturrock
He believes that the club have achieved some stability after a history of hiring and firing managers in previous years but admitted "you can never relax" in the uncertain world of management.
Laws said: "So much has happened since I came here that the time has flown by. The board have stood by me; the supporters have, as well. That has helped immensely.
"I did say when I first came that I wanted to become the longest-serving manager at the club for the last 10 years. I've almost achieved that.
"This week has shown that in football things can change quickly: three managers have gone in two days (Watford's Aidy Boothroyd, Carlisle's John Ward and Huddersfield's Stan Ternent.)
"Every manager knows that at some stage it's going to come to an end. When and in what circumstances, you don't know. That's the reality, to me. You can never, ever relax.
"Since the moment I arrived, things have definitely changed. I thought we would be spending money and really pushing and trying to compete but unfortunately that's all fallen away.
"It's nearly a year since the chairman (Dave Allen] has gone, so I think the club has held together well. It's important that everybody sticks together for the good of the club."
Laws wants to stay beyond his current contract, which runs out next summer, and hopes that the new investment for which the club are searching will point to an even brighter future
"We are working to a tighter budget these days. The club is stable enough, but within its own framework. The aim has to be to remain stable so if anybody does come in with new investment we can move forward.
"I've been in the game a long time but I've learned a lot in these last two years and I'm a better man for it."
Looking for a first win in five games on Saturday, he added: "We want to get back to winning ways. Our home record had a blip against Plymouth, not because we played badly but because we didn't win.
"We have to get back on track against Doncaster. They will be desperate to win for their own reasons - but we are desperate to win for our own benefit. Nobody helps anybody in this division."
Meanwhile Owls midfield Sean McAllister has said it would be a "travesty" if Laws leaves: "The gaffer has done a fantastic job here, despite limited resources.
"It would be a travesty if we let him go now so hopefully he'll stay, sign a new deal and kick the club on again.
"He has a huge passion and enthusiasm for the game and that transfers to the players. I'm enjoying my time under him at the moment.
"Everybody knows he has had his hands tied in terms of money but he's done an excellent job."
